Documentary films changing the world

This article lists nine documentary films that "changed the world" and include a number of the films discussed in your textbook Milestones in Documentary. Certainly there is no denying that films which lead to the release of wrongly-incarcerated individuals, like The Thin Blue Line and Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills are life-changing on many levels. Have you seen any of these films and would you agree they're significant?

  1. Taking a look at a situation through a camera lens brings a new light to it. In particular with criminal cases, evidence and eye witness accounts are subjected to further scrutiny creating an opening for justice to be served where it had previously been denied. I believe that without documentaries such as The Thin Blue Line or Paradise Lost, these wrongfully convicted individuals would still be in prison or even executed. These films made a significant difference to their lives, as well as their friends and family who have been suffering with them. They have also created the possibility for a new investigation to open to hopefully bring the true culprits to justice or at least start the discussion. Also, I believe they provide hope for numerous of innocent people prison that they might one day see justice.
